280 lights on Lianxi Avenue, Gaocheng

A district transport bureau replaced the lighting on a lorry route at the edge of Shijiazhuang. The job was won on schedule, staged by section, and signed off with a night drive.

What the site needed

Lianxi Avenue carries heavy goods traffic and had stretches with no working light. The bureau set a hard date: the urban section finished before the end of August, the rest of the line in early September. A missed date on a road like this is a safety problem, not a commercial one.

There was no trenching budget and no grid connection on the outer sections, so the specification had to be self-contained: panel, battery, controller and light in one head.

How it was run

  • One luminaire model for the whole line, so the crew learned one bracket and one commissioning step.
  • Batch test before packing: every unit switched on, charged and logged, with the record kept by serial number.
  • Delivery split by section, in the order the crew worked, so nothing sat on the verge overnight.
  • Two spares per hundred units shipped with the last batch, held by the maintenance depot.
  • Sign-off at night, from a vehicle, filming both carriageways. Daylight photographs hide a dead LED.

What it proves

A retrofit is a schedule problem more than a product problem. The buyer is not comparing lumen figures; they are comparing the date on the programme with the date you can stand behind. The supplier who ships in the installation sequence, with the test records already sorted, removes the two things that stop a crew: waiting and rework.

It also shows why we publish footage rather than a logo wall. The road, the sign and the date are visible. The supplier name is not, and we say so.

Landed luminaire cost200 x USD 285 = USD 57,000
Installation crew and lift200 x USD 55 = USD 11,000
Foundations and civil work200 x USD 25 = USD 5,000
Gross profitUSD 13,000 (15%)

Illustrative planning figures at current quote levels, not this project's contract. Freight, duty and currency are the three lines that decide whether 15% survives.

What to copy, what to avoid

  • Ask for the section schedule before you ask for the price.
  • Standardise on one model for the whole road; mixed models slow the crew and multiply the spares.
  • Sign off at night. A daylight photo is not commissioning evidence.
  • Ship spares with the last batch, not after the first failure.
