1,000 lights for rural roads in Jinsha County
A county-wide rural lighting programme, supplied as one standard model in a single production block and distributed across village roads.
What the site needed
A county with steep terrain and scattered villages needed light on roads that no utility was going to serve. The programme had a fixed total budget, many small delivery points and a short installation window before winter.
How it was run
- One model, one colour, one carton. Mixed specifications would have made the distribution list unmanageable.
- Production in a single block so that every village received identical hardware.
- Batch palletised by township, with the distribution list printed and packed in carton one.
- A 2% spare pool held at the county seat rather than split across villages.
What it proves
At a thousand units, the cheapest thing you can do is refuse complexity. Every extra model adds a spare part, a manual, a training session and a line on the distribution list. Standardisation is not a limitation of the product; it is the operating system of the programme.
Why one model wins at volume
| Order quantity | 1,000 units, one model |
| Tooling and setup | Amortised across the batch |
| Spare parts | One controller, one driver, one battery pack |
| Training | One session for all townships |
| Distribution | Palletised by township, not by village |
| Administration | One specification, one approval |
The saving is not in the unit price. It is in the spares pool, the training days and the number of people who have to approve something.
What to copy, what to avoid
- Standardise before you negotiate, not after.
- Palletise by the unit that signs for delivery.
- Hold spares centrally; villages lose parts.
- A printed distribution list inside carton one saves a week of confusion.
